South African citizens who wish to acquire the citizenship of another country are required to obtain the necessary exemption from the Department of Home Affairs, in order for them not to loose their South African citizenship. Only persons over the age of 21 may apply. The following are required:

• BI-1665 or BI-1666 application form
• BI-529 application form
• Fees
• Copy of the other country's passport or identity document



South African parents who wish to register their children as South African citizens are required to submit the following:

• South African passport or identity document
• Birth certificate of the child
• Marriage certificate
• BI-529 application form
• BI-24 application form
• Letter of exemption of the parent holds the citizenship of another country.
